Ever since coming to CURA 10 years ago I’ve been able to manage my SI joint arthritis without medication. I give credit to their excellent care and their wide range of treatments. The staff is caring and very knowledgeable and I’ve recommended CURA to my family and friends.

Let us teach you how to manage and support this hidden problem

Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is commonly found in females especially in the post partum period or the peri menopausal- menopausal- post-menopausal times.  Sometimes the POP is obvious with feelings of pressure or a buldge at the vaginal opening. A POP can be hidden but causing impacts on your body such as unresolving back or hip pain, chronic constipation or recurrent baldder infections.

What is Pelvic Organ Prolapse?

Quite simply, it is a lack of fascial-connective tissue support for one or all of the pelvic organs (bladder, uterus and rectum) that is often combined with pelvic floor muscle dysfunction and results in the movement of the pelvic organs downward in the vagina.  POP is affected by increased pressure on the pelvic area from poor posture, digestive issues such as chronic constipation and participation in higher pressure activities (e.g. CrossFit, running, skipping and jumping)

Besides feelings of  pressure or heaviness in the pelvis there are other symptoms you may be  experiencing that can be due to POP:

  • Pain and discomfort in the pelvis, hip or back
  • Increased difficulty with voiding
  • Increased occurrence of bladder infections
  • Discomfort with sitting and activity
  • Incontinence
  • Decreased sexual satisfaction
  • Difficulty having a bowel movement

Over 50% of over 50 year olds will experience pelvic organ prolapse and may or may not have symptoms.

Our Approach to Pelvic Organ Prolapse

At CURA Physical Therapies we work with you to reduce the symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse, develop the skills for managing your prolapse and coach you on the habits to have so that the POP's impact is minimal.

Optimal  Posture and Movement: From your feet to your spine we work with you to create good movement patterns, enhance your breathing strategies, improve your core muscle activation all with the goal of reducing pressure on the pelvic floor and pelvic organs.  We find hypopressive training is beneficial. Ultrasound biofeedback can give you visual feedback on how your deeper abdominal  muscles are working.

Pelvic Muscle Training: We work to identify which muscles are working too little or too hard and get your pelvic floor muscles to work together in a coordinated way to support your organs.

General Body Conditioning: We coach you in ways to do the activities you want to while protecting and providing support for your pelvic floor.

Behavioural Rehab: We help discover the habits you may have that are putting increased strain on your pelvic organs. Then we develop strategies to help you do simple everyday activities (e.g. toileting, lifting, etc).

Coordinated Effort With Your Gynaecological and Healthcare Team: Sometimes pelvic organ prolapse requires a pessary for support or surgery.  We work with your care team to get you back to full health and activities.  We will work with your trainers or fitness instructors.
